ON 23 FEBRUARY a commemoration was held in the southern Tyrol for the Russian soldiers that built the Val Gardena (Grödner Bahn) railway branch that started operations in February 1916. As it happened that Russians celebrated the Day of Defence of the Fatherland on 23 February, a panikhida (memorial service) was held at the parish church of St. Ulrich in Urtijëi in the Southern Tyrol in northern Italy in observance of the 100th anniversary of the Val Gardena Railway for Russian soldiers who perished from wounds and disease during captivity and hard labour there. Both Catholic and Orthodox clergy prayed for the repose of the souls of the dead.
